Employers and Alumni
Info for Employers
Saint Michael’s students and alumni are highly sought after in the job market. As a liberal arts college, we not only teach the essentials in a particular discipline, we provide students with the skills they need to succeed: critical thinking, writing, creativity, public speaking and more. Experiential learning is a significant component of a St. Mike’s education. From a rich study abroad program to volunteer opportunities with the Fire + Rescue squad, our students and alumni understand the value of collaboration and making connections to those around them.
If you are looking for tomorrow’s leaders, you have come to the right place.
Internships
Internships offer an invaluable opportunity for our students to extend their education in a real-world setting, explore career options, apply knowledge, expand their professional network, and gain transferable skills.
If a student is using an internship to earn credits through Saint Michael’s College then they’ll be required to complete a minimum of 130 internship hours during the semester at an approved internship site. The internship can be paid or unpaid, and the main goal in either case is for the student to contribute to the organization in a manner that will allow them to enhance their professional skills and apply their learning.
If your organization would like to recruit a student intern from St. Mike’s, here is the basic information that we’ll need to effectively advertise your opportunity to students:
- Company information (address, phone, website)
- Supervisor’s contact information (name, job title, email, phone)
- Internship details
- Title (this will appear as the headline of the posting in our Handshake system)
- Timeframe (fall, spring, summer)
- Duties/responsibilities/projects/tasks
- Learning outcomes/opportunities
- QualificationsPay level (paid/unpaid)
- Application instructions
- Additional information you would like students to know before applying
Once your internship description is ready you can now get it advertised with us:
- Post opportunities yourself in Handshake by registering for a new employer account.
In general, students are seeking fall/spring internship opportunities in the greater Burlington, VT area, and summer opportunities nationwide. Please feel free to contact the Career Education Center if you have any questions or would like to talk further about our internship program or the needs of your organization. We look forward to collaborating with you!

Alumni Resources
We support our alumni no matter what stage of the career development process they are in. We do everything from helping with the job search to career change planning. Alumni are also critical in helping our students plan for life after college through mentoring, job shadowing, and attending networking events.

Host a Job Shadow
The Job Shadow Program is offered through the Career Education and Alumni Engagement Center to provide students the opportunity to discover different career paths by shadowing alumni in their workplace.
We invite alumni who are out of college three years or more, employed full-time and have the ability to host a student at their place of employment to reach out to Stephanie Snell, Director for Alumni and Family Engagement.
Please note: For the safety and welfare of our students, alumni who work from home may not offer a job shadow experience.
Networking
Looking for a way to advance your career? Here are some tips to get started:
Attend one of the many regional career networking events hosted by the Alumni Engagement Office.
Handshake: create an account linked to your employer profile to share job opportunities with SMC students. You can also view jobs if you create an account as an alumnus with a separate email address. With this account, you can also make an appointment with a career coach.
